Siddharth Anand
Siddharth Anand (born 31 July 1978) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He is widely recognised for directing large-scale action entertainers, including War (2019), Pathaan (2023), and Fighter (2024). His films are known for their stylish visuals, high production values, and mass appeal, making him one of the most commercially successful action directors in modern Bollywood.
Early Life and Background
Siddharth Anand was born on 31 July 1978 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into a prominent film family. He is the grandson of veteran screenwriter Inder Raj Anand, who wrote over 125 Hindi films, and the son of producer Bittu Anand, best known for Shahenshah (1988). He is also the nephew of actor-director Tinnu Anand and cousin of filmmaker Mukul Anand.[1]
He completed his schooling in Mumbai and later studied at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. Growing up in a film-oriented household, Anand was exposed to filmmaking from an early age, though he initially entered the industry through behind-the-scenes roles rather than directorial work.[2]
Career
Assistant Director and Screenwriting (2001–2004)
Anand began his career as an assistant director on Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi (2001). He later assisted on Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). His breakthrough came when he co-wrote the screenplay for Hum Tum (2004), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. He also served as associate director on the project.[3]
Directorial Debut and Romantic Films (2005–2010)
Siddharth Anand made his directorial debut with Salaam Namaste (2005), a romantic comedy that became a major commercial success, particularly overseas. He followed this with Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), and Anjaana Anjaani (2010). These films established him as a director associated with urban romance and youth-centric storytelling.
Transition to Action Cinema (2014–2019)
After a brief hiatus, Anand shifted genres with Bang Bang! (2014), marking his entry into big-budget action cinema. His major turning point came with War (2019), produced by Yash Raj Films, which became the highest-grossing Hindi film of that year and positioned Anand as a leading action filmmaker.
Blockbusters and Expansion (2020–present)
In 2020, Anand co-founded the production house Marflix Pictures with his wife Mamta Anand. Under this banner, he directed Pathaan (2023), which grossed over ₹1,000 crore worldwide and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He followed this with Fighter (2024), an aerial action drama inspired by the Indian Air Force.
Anand is currently directing King (scheduled for 2026), starring Shah Rukh Khan, further cementing his association with large-scale action cinema.
