Shreyas Iyer (born 6 December 1994) is an Indian international cricketer who represents the Indian national cricket team in limited-overs formats. Known for his stylish batting and ability to handle pressure in the middle order, Iyer is regarded as one of the most dependable batters of modern Indian cricket.

He gained worldwide recognition after scoring a century on his Test debut and following it with a half-century in the same match, becoming the first Indian cricketer to achieve this milestone.

Early Life

Shreyas Iyer was born in Chembur, Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father Santosh Iyer worked in the banking sector, while his mother Rohini Iyer is a homemaker. He also has a younger sister named Shrishti Iyer.[1]

He completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School in Matunga and later attended Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.

Iyer began formal cricket training at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana and the DY Patil Cricket Academy. During his early years, he trained under coach Pravin Amre, who played an important role in shaping his cricketing career.[2]

At the age-group level, many teammates compared his aggressive batting style to former Indian opener Virender Sehwag.[3]

Domestic Career

Iyer made his List A debut for Mumbai in November 2014 during the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He impressed with 273 runs in the tournament.[4]

He made his first-class debut in December 2014 in the Ranji Trophy.

During the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 809 runs at an average of over 50, including two centuries and six half-centuries.

His biggest domestic breakthrough came in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy, where he scored 1,321 runs at an average of 73.39, finishing as the highest run-scorer of the tournament.

Iyer later captained Mumbai in domestic tournaments and remained one of the most consistent performers in Indian domestic cricket.[5]

International Career

Shreyas Iyer was selected in India's T20 International squad for the series against New Zealand in 2017.

He made his T20I debut on 1 November 2017 against New Zealand.

He made his ODI debut on 10 December 2017 against Sri Lanka.

In 2020, he scored his maiden ODI century with a knock of 103 against New Zealand.

Iyer made his Test debut against New Zealand in November 2021. In that match, he scored 105 runs in the first innings and 65 in the second innings, becoming the first Indian player to score both a century and a half-century in his debut Test match.

He has been a crucial member of India's limited-overs teams and was part of squads that won major tournaments including the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Indian Premier League

Shreyas Iyer began his IPL career in 2015 after being signed by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for ₹2.6 crore.

He scored 439 runs in his debut season and won the Emerging Player of the Year award.

In 2018, he became the captain of Delhi Daredevils and led the team to the playoffs in 2019. Under his leadership, the team reached its first IPL final in 2020.

In the 2022 IPL auction, he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders and appointed captain. He later led the team to win the 2024 IPL title.
