Ishan Kishan (born 18 July 1998) is an Indian international cricketer who plays as a wicketkeeper-batter. Known for his aggressive left-handed batting and ability to score quickly, Kishan represents the Indian national cricket team in limited-overs formats and plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He gained worldwide attention in 2022 after scoring a double century in a One Day International match against Bangladesh, becoming one of the youngest players to achieve the milestone.
Early Life
Ishan Kishan was born in Patna, Bihar. He developed an interest in cricket at a young age and began his cricket journey in his hometown before moving forward in domestic cricket.[1]
Although Bihar is not traditionally known for producing many international cricketers, Kishan’s talent and determination helped him rise through the ranks. He later represented Jharkhand in domestic cricket, where he gained recognition for his aggressive batting and wicketkeeping skills.[2]
Domestic Career
Kishan made his first-class debut for Jharkhand in 2014 at the age of 16.
During his early domestic career, he impressed with several strong performances. One of the highlights came during the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season when he scored 799 runs in ten matches at an average above 57.
In the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Kishan captained the Indian team. The team finished as runners-up in the tournament.[3]
Over time, he became one of Jharkhand’s most important players in domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
International Career
Ishan Kishan made his T20 International debut for India against England on 14 March 2021. In his debut match, he scored a half-century, making an immediate impact.[4]
He made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka on 18 July 2021.
In December 2022, Kishan achieved a major milestone by scoring 210 runs against Bangladesh. This knock became one of the fastest double centuries in ODI cricket history and established him as one of India’s most explosive white-ball players.
He has since continued to contribute in international cricket with aggressive batting performances.[5]
Indian Premier League
Ishan Kishan made his IPL debut in 2016 when he was signed by Gujarat Lions.
After two seasons with Gujarat Lions, he joined Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL auction. With Mumbai Indians, he became one of the team’s key top-order batters.
His breakthrough IPL season came in 2020, when he scored 516 runs and helped Mumbai Indians win the tournament.
Ahead of the 2025 IPL season, Kishan was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad and continued his role as an attacking top-order batter.
