Ishaan Khatter (born 1 November 1995) is an Indian actor who works in Hindi films and international projects. He is known for his performances in Beyond the Clouds (2017), Dhadak (2018), A Suitable Boy (2020), and Homebound (2025).[1]

He gained critical recognition early in his career and has since appeared in Indian and global film and television productions.

Early Life and Background

Ishaan Khatter was born in Mumbai into a film-oriented family. His father, Rajesh Khattar, is an actor, and his mother, Neelima Azeem, is an actress and dancer.

He is the half-brother of actor Shahid Kapoor. Through his mother, he is connected to a family associated with writer and filmmaker Khwaja Ahmad Abbas.[2]

Khatter studied at Jamnabai Narsee School and Billabong High International School in Mumbai. He also trained in dance at Shiamak Davar’s academy.

As a child, he appeared in the film Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! (2005). Before becoming an actor, he worked as an assistant director on films including Udta Punjab (2016).

Career

Early Work and Debut (2017–2018)

Ishaan Khatter made his adult acting debut with Majid Majidi’s film Beyond the Clouds (2017), where he played a drug dealer. The performance earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.[3]

In 2018, he starred in Dhadak, a romantic drama opposite Janhvi Kapoor. The film became a commercial success and brought him wider recognition.

Expansion into Global Projects (2020–2023)

In 2020, Khatter starred in the BBC miniseries A Suitable Boy, directed by Mira Nair. He played a key role opposite Tabu.

He also appeared in the film Khaali Peeli (2020), released digitally due to the pandemic.

In 2022, he featured in the horror-comedy Phone Bhoot. In 2023, he appeared in Pippa, a war drama based on real military events, where he played Captain Balram Singh Mehta.

He also appeared in the short film Fursat, shot entirely on an iPhone.[4]

International Recognition and Recent Work (2024–present)

In 2024, Khatter appeared in the American Netflix series The Perfect Couple. In 2025, he starred in the romantic drama series The Royals.

In 2025, he played a critically acclaimed role in Homebound, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received a standing ovation. The film was praised for his emotional performance.
