Deepti Bhagwan Sharma (born 24 August 1997) is an Indian international women’s cricketer who plays as an all-rounder for the India women’s national team. Widely regarded as one of the most consistent performers in women’s cricket, she is known for her left-handed batting and right-arm off-spin bowling. Deepti played a pivotal role in India’s victory at the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup, where she was named Player of the Tournament.

Early Life and Background

Deepti Sharma was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, to Bhagwan Sharma, an employee of the Indian Railways, and Sushilaa Sharma. She was introduced to cricket while accompanying her elder brother, Sumit Sharma, a former Uttar Pradesh fast bowler, to training sessions at the Ekalavya Sports Stadium in Agra.[1]

Her talent came to prominence when she executed a direct hit from nearly 50 metres during a practice session, catching the attention of former India selector Hemlata Kala. This moment proved decisive in shaping her professional cricketing career.[2]

International Career

Deepti Sharma made her One Day International debut for India against South Africa on 28 November 2014 in Bengaluru. She later went on to represent India across all three formats.[3]

In 2017, she achieved global recognition after scoring 188 runs against Ireland, while opening the innings alongside Poonam Raut. The pair set a world-record opening partnership of 320 runs, the highest in women’s ODI cricket at the time.[4]

She was a key contributor during the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, where India finished as runners-up. Deepti scored 216 runs and took 12 wickets during the tournament, establishing herself as a dependable all-rounder on the world stage.

Domestic and Franchise Career

Domestically, Deepti has represented Uttar Pradesh and Bengal, where she developed her game further under the guidance of experienced players such as Jhulan Goswami. Her performances during the 2017–18 domestic season included 312 runs at an average exceeding 100 and nine wickets.

She has also played in several overseas leagues, including the Kia Super League with Western Storm, The Hundred with London Spirit, and the Women’s Big Bash League with Sydney Thunder.[5]

In 2023, Deepti was signed by UP Warriorz at the Women’s Premier League auction for ₹2.6 crore. During the 2024 WPL season, she became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in the league and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

2025 Women’s World Cup

Deepti Sharma reached a career peak during the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup, where she played a central role in India’s title-winning campaign. She scored 215 runs and took 22 wickets across nine matches, becoming the first player in World Cup history to achieve 200+ runs and 20+ wickets in a single edition.

Her performances earned her the Player of the Tournament award and widespread recognition as one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket.

Playing Style and Recognition

A left-handed batter and right-arm off-spinner, Deepti is valued for her tactical awareness, consistency, and calm temperament. She has often been entrusted with critical overs and key batting responsibilities in pressure situations.

Her honors include the Jagmohan Dalmiya Trophy for Best Senior Women’s Domestic Cricketer (2018). In January 2025, she was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Uttar Pradesh Police under the sports quota.
