Arijit Singh (born 25 April 1987) is an Indian playback singer and music composer who primarily works in Hindi cinema. Known for his soulful voice and emotional range, he is regarded as one of the most successful and influential singers in contemporary Indian music.
He rose to national fame with the song Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013), which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
Early Life and Education
Arijit Singh was born in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal, to a Punjabi father and a Bengali mother. He grew up in a musically inclined family. His maternal grandmother and mother were trained singers, and his maternal uncle played the tabla.[1]
He received early training in music at home before pursuing professional instruction. He studied Indian classical music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari, learned tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and was trained in Rabindra Sangeet and pop music by Birendra Prasad Hazari.[2]
For his formal education, Singh attended Raja Bijay Singh High School and later studied at Sripat Singh College, affiliated with the University of Kalyani. Although he performed well academically, he has stated that his primary interest was always music.
Career
Reality Shows and Early Struggles (2005–2010)
Arijit Singh first appeared on the reality television show Fame Gurukul in 2005, where he finished among the finalists. Though he did not win, the show introduced him to the music industry.[3]
He later won the show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, which enabled him to set up his own recording studio. During this period, he worked as an assistant music programmer for composers such as Pritam, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Vishal–Shekhar, and Mithoon.[4]
Breakthrough and Stardom (2011–2015)
Singh made his playback debut with Phir Mohabbat from the film Murder 2 (2011). However, his major breakthrough came with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013). The song became a nationwide hit and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer at the 59th Filmfare Awards.
