Amit Jain
Amit Jain (born November 12, 1976) is an Indian entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of CarDekho, one of India’s leading auto-tech platforms. He is also the CEO of GirnarSoft, the parent company of CarDekho. A self-made businessman, Jain transformed his passion for technology and automobiles into a billion-dollar venture. In 2023, he became a household name after joining as a judge on Shark Tank India Season 3.[1]
Early Life and Education
Amit Jain was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His father, Late Mr. Prashant Jain, was a former RBI officer and gemstone businessman, and his mother, Nilma Jain, is a homemaker. He has a younger brother, Anurag Jain, who is the COO and co-founder of CarDekho.
Amit completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s School, Jaipur, and graduated in Computer Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in 1999.[2]
Career
Amit began his career as a Software Engineer at Tata Consultancy Services in 1999 and later worked with Trilogy, a software company in the U.S., where he served as Senior Associate, Delivery Manager, and Product Manager for nearly 7 years.
In 2007, Amit and his brother returned to Jaipur and co-founded GirnarSoft with the vision of building a tech company from their hometown. The business initially started from a garage and grew quickly, building software for global clients.[3]
Founding CarDekho
In 2008, the Jain brothers launched CarDekho.com after attending the Auto Expo in Delhi. Initially bootstrapped, the platform became a key project under GirnarSoft. The company provided car reviews, comparisons, prices, and tools for both new and used car buyers.
Despite a financial setback during the 2009 stock market crash, Jain persisted and turned CarDekho into a flagship brand. Without spending heavily on marketing, the platform grew organically through user trust and strong automotive content.[4]
Growth and Recognition
Under Amit Jain’s leadership, CarDekho reached remarkable milestones:
- Over 35 million monthly users
- 6,000+ used car sales and 3,000+ new car sales monthly
- Acquired competitors like Gaddi.com and ZigWheels
- Raised $250 million in Series E round, achieving unicorn status in 2021
- Launched platforms like BikeDekho, PriceDekho, and expanded globally[5]
GirnarSoft and Other Ventures
GirnarSoft, founded in 2007, is an ISO-certified IT outsourcing firm that operates multiple tech portals. With investments from Sequoia Capital, Google Capital, Tybourne, and Ratan Tata, it has become one of India’s top tech groups.[6]
Amit Jain on Shark Tank India
In 2023, Amit Jain joined the third season of Shark Tank India as an investor (shark). With his rich entrepreneurial background, he mentors and invests in young startups from across India, especially those emerging from Tier II and Tier III cities.[7]
