[1]Aamir Hussain Khan (born 14 March 1965) is an Indian actor, filmmaker, and television personality who works in Hindi films. Often referred to as "Mr. Perfectionist", he is regarded as one of the most influential and notable actors in Indian cinema. With a career spanning over three decades, he has received multiple awards, including Filmfare Awards, National Film Awards, and international recognition. He was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.

Early Life and Education

Aamir Khan was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, into a film-oriented family. His father, Tahir Hussain, was a film producer, and his mother, Zeenat Hussain, was a homemaker. He has one brother, Faisal Khan, and two sisters, Farhat and Nikhat Khan.[2]

His family has roots in Afghanistan and Arabia. Several of his relatives were associated with the Hindi film industry, including his uncle Nasir Hussain, a filmmaker, and his cousin Mansoor Khan, a director.

Khan studied at J.B. Petit School, St. Anne’s High School, and Bombay Scottish School. He later completed his higher secondary education from Narsee Monjee College. During his school years, he was actively involved in tennis and became a state-level champion.

Career

Early Career and Breakthrough (1973–1989)

Aamir Khan began his career as a child actor in the film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). He later appeared in minor roles before making his debut as a lead actor in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), which became a major commercial success and established him as a rising star.[3]

He gained further recognition for his performance in Raakh (1989), which earned him critical acclaim.

Rise to Prominence (1990–2004)

During the 1990s, Khan established himself as a leading actor with successful films such as Dil (1990), Rangeela (1995), Raja Hindustani (1996), and Sarfarosh (1999). His role in Raja Hindustani earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

In 2001, he founded Aamir Khan Productions and produced Lagaan, which received international recognition and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The same year, he starred in Dil Chahta Hai, which was both a critical and commercial success. He then took a brief hiatus from acting.

Comeback and Peak Success (2005–2017)

Khan returned to films with Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005). He delivered notable performances in Rang De Basanti (2006) and Fanaa (2006).

In 2007, he made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par, which received widespread acclaim. He continued his success with commercially successful films such as Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014), and Dangal (2016), many of which became some of the highest-grossing Indian films.[4]

Recent Work (2018–present)

Khan appeared in Thugs of Hindostan (2018), which received mixed to negative reviews. His 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha did not perform well at the box office.

After a hiatus, he returned with Sitaare Zameen Par, where he played a coach working with players with disabilities. The film achieved moderate commercial success.

Film Production and Direction

Aamir Khan founded Aamir Khan Productions in 1999. Under this banner, he produced several successful and critically acclaimed films including Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Dhobi Ghat, and Secret Superstar.

His directorial debut Taare Zameen Par was widely appreciated and earned him awards for Best Director and Best Film.

Television

Khan made his television debut with the talk show Satyamev Jayate in 2012. The show addressed social issues and received positive reception for raising awareness on important topics in India.
