Tejashwi Prasad Yadav (born 9 November 1989) is an Indian politician, former professional cricketer, and prominent leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). He has served twice as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and is currently the Chief Ministerial candidate of the Mahagathbandhan alliance for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

The youngest son of former Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, Tejashwi has emerged as one of the leading voices of young politics in India, known for his progressive vision, social justice advocacy, and charismatic public presence.[1]

Early Life & Education

Tejashwi Yadav was born on 9 November 1989 in Gopalganj, Bihar, India, into one of the state’s most influential political families. He is the ninth and youngest child of veteran leaders Lalu Prasad Yadav[2] and Rabri Devi.[3]

He completed his schooling at Delhi Public School (DPS), Vasant Vihar and later attended DPS R.K. Puram. However, he left school before completing his Class 10 examinations to pursue a professional cricket career. His formative years in Delhi exposed him to both education and sports at a national level, shaping his leadership and teamwork abilities.[4]

Cricket Career

Before entering politics, Tejashwi Yadav was a professional cricketer. A talented right-hand batsman, he represented Delhi’s U-15, U-17, and U-19 teams, where he shared the dressing room with future Indian cricket stars like Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma.

He was also a part of the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) between 2008 and 2012, though he did not make his debut match appearance. Additionally, Tejashwi played for Jharkhand’s state team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Despite a promising sports career, he transitioned into politics in 2013, following in his family’s footsteps.

Political Career

Tejashwi entered active politics in 2010 under the banner of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). His first major breakthrough came in the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, where he contested from the Raghopur constituency and won decisively. Following the Mahagathbandhan’s victory, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar at the age of 26 — making him the youngest in the state’s history to hold the position.

Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar (2015–2017)

In his first term, Tejashwi focused on improving Bihar’s road infrastructure, employment opportunities, and youth empowerment initiatives. His accessible leadership style and mass appeal made him a rising political figure. However, the alliance between the JD(U) and RJD collapsed in 2017, ending his tenure prematurely.

Leader of Opposition (2020–2022)

After the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Tejashwi became the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. His campaign drew attention for its message of “Rozgaar aur Nyaay” (Employment and Justice), targeting youth unemployment and corruption. Under his leadership, RJD secured the highest vote share in the state.

Return to Power (2022–2024)

In 2022, after Nitish Kumar broke ties with the BJP and rejoined the Mahagathbandhan, Tejashwi once again became the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. His tenure was marked by welfare-focused schemes, including employment drives and infrastructural development projects. However, political realignments in 2024 led to another shift in power dynamics, returning Nitish Kumar to the NDA fold.

Chief Ministerial Candidate (2025)

As of 2025, Tejashwi Yadav leads the RJD and the Mahagathbandhan alliance as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the Bihar Assembly elections. His campaign focuses on development, education, healthcare, and employment, aiming to reshape Bihar’s political narrative around inclusive growth.
