Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton (born 7 January 1985) is a British racing driver who competes in Formula One for Ferrari. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of motorsport. Hamilton has won a joint-record seven Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles, tied with Michael Schumacher, and holds records for most race wins, pole positions and podium finishes.[1]

Early Life and Education

Hamilton was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. His father, Anthony Hamilton, played a major role in supporting his racing career from a young age. Hamilton began karting at the age of six and quickly established himself as one of Britain's brightest young racing talents.[2]

He attended The John Henry Newman School in Stevenage and later studied at Cambridge Arts and Sciences College.

Junior Career

Hamilton enjoyed a highly successful karting career, winning multiple British and European championships. In 1998, he joined the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme after impressing McLaren team principal Ron Dennis.

He later won the Formula 3 Euro Series Championship in 2005 and the GP2 Series Championship in 2006, earning promotion to Formula One for the 2007 season.[3]

Formula One Career

McLaren (2007–2012)

Hamilton made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2007 and immediately impressed by finishing third in his first race in Australia. He finished runner-up in the championship during his rookie season, losing the title by just one point.

In 2008, Hamilton won his first Formula One World Championship, becoming the youngest champion in history at the time.[4]

Mercedes (2013–2024)

Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 and formed one of the most successful partnerships in Formula One history.

He won six additional championships with Mercedes in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, establishing himself as one of the sport's greatest drivers.[5]

Ferrari (2025–present)

Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025, fulfilling his childhood dream of driving for the Italian team. He secured his first Ferrari victory during the 2026 Formula One season.[6]

Driving Style

Hamilton is known for his exceptional speed, tyre management, wet-weather driving ability and racecraft. He is widely regarded as one of the most complete drivers in Formula One history.

Activism and Philanthropy

Outside racing, Hamilton is an advocate for diversity, racial equality, environmental protection and animal welfare. He founded the Hamilton Commission and Mission 44 to increase opportunities for underrepresented groups in motorsport and education.[7]

Personal Life

Hamilton is a vegan and has been involved in several business ventures, including the non-alcoholic beverage brand Almave. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to motorsport.[8]
