She is widely regarded as one of the most successful actresses of her generation and is known for her work in both blockbuster and independent films. Robbie gained international recognition with her breakthrough performance in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and later became globally famous for portraying Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe films.[1]

Throughout her career, Robbie has received nominations for multiple Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and British Academy Film Awards. In 2023, she became the world's highest-paid actress and achieved one of the biggest commercial successes of her career with Barbie, which became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Apart from acting, Robbie is a successful producer and co-founder of LuckyChap Entertainment, a production company known for producing female-driven projects including I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, Maid, Saltburn, and Barbie.[2]

Early Life and Education

Margot Elise Robbie was born on 2 July 1990 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. She was raised primarily by her mother, Sarie Kessler, a physiotherapist, after her parents separated when she was young. Her father, Doug Robbie, was a former farm owner and businessman.

Robbie spent much of her childhood on her grandparents' farm in Currumbin Valley. During her early years she developed interests in outdoor activities, including surfing and animal care. Despite growing up in a rural environment, she showed a strong interest in performing arts from a young age.[3]

She attended Somerset College in Queensland, where she studied drama. During her teenage years, Robbie worked several jobs, including tending bar, cleaning houses, and working at Subway, while pursuing acting opportunities.

Career

2008–2012: Early Career and Neighbours

Robbie began her professional acting career with guest appearances in Australian television productions such as City Homicide and The Elephant Princess.[4]

In 2008, she was cast as Donna Freedman in the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours. Initially intended as a guest character, Donna became popular with audiences and Robbie was promoted to the regular cast. Her performance earned her two Logie Award nominations and established her as a rising talent in Australian television.

Following her success on Neighbours, Robbie moved to the United States to pursue an international acting career. She soon secured a leading role as flight attendant Laura Cameron in the ABC television drama Pan Am (2011–2012). Although the series was cancelled after one season, it helped introduce Robbie to American audiences.

2013–2015: International Breakthrough

Robbie's international breakthrough came in 2013 with Martin Scorsese's biographical black comedy The Wolf of Wall Street. Starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, she portrayed Naomi Lapaglia, the wife of stockbroker Jordan Belfort.

The film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing nearly $400 million worldwide. Robbie's performance was widely praised and established her as one of Hollywood's most promising young actresses.

The same year, she appeared in the romantic comedy-drama About Time.

In 2014, Robbie co-founded LuckyChap Entertainment alongside Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. The company was created with the goal of producing more female-focused stories and supporting women filmmakers.

During 2015, Robbie starred in several films, including:[5]

  • Focus (2015)
  • Suite Française (2015)
  • Z for Zachariah (2015)
  • The Big Short (2015)

Her performances during this period further strengthened her reputation as a versatile actress capable of both dramatic and comedic roles.
