Sergey Brin
Sergey Mikhailovich Brin (born August 21, 1973) is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of Google, alongside Larry Page. He played a key role in developing the search engine technology that revolutionized access to information on the internet.
Brin served as the president of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, until stepping down in 2019. He remains actively involved as a co-founder, board member, and controlling shareholder. As of recent years, he is among the richest individuals in the world.[1]
Early Life and Education
Sergey Brin was born in Moscow, Soviet Union, into a Russian-Jewish family. His parents, both graduates of Moscow State University, later moved to the United States due to discrimination in the Soviet Union.
The family emigrated to the United States in 1979. Brin grew up in Maryland, where his father became a mathematics professor and his mother worked as a researcher at NASA.[2]
He attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School and later enrolled at the University of Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and mathematics with honors. He then pursued graduate studies at Stanford University, where he received a Master’s degree in computer science.
Career
Founding Google
At Stanford University, Brin met Larry Page. Together, they developed a research project that became the foundation for Google. Their search engine used a new algorithm called PageRank, which ranked web pages based on relevance and links.[3]
In 1998, they officially founded Google in a garage in Menlo Park, California. The company quickly grew into one of the most influential technology companies in the world.
Role in Alphabet
Brin later became the president of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company. He stepped down from the role in 2019 but continues to influence the company’s direction.[4]
In 2023, he returned to contribute to artificial intelligence research at Alphabet, focusing on advanced technologies.
Other Ventures
Sergey Brin has invested in several innovative projects, including space tourism company Space Adventures and airship development through LTA Research.
He has also supported research in science, healthcare, and emerging technologies.
Personal Life
Brin was raised in a Jewish family but is not religious. He married Anne Wojcicki in 2007, and the couple later divorced in 2015. He then married Nicole Shanahan in 2018, and they separated in 2021.
He has children from his marriages and is known for maintaining a relatively private personal life.[5]
Philanthropy
Brin has donated significant amounts to charitable causes, especially research related to Parkinson’s disease, which affects his mother. He has contributed over $1 billion to scientific research and humanitarian causes.
