Aditya Roy Kapur (born 16 November 1985) is an Indian actor who works mainly in Hindi films. He began his career as a video jockey and later transitioned into acting. He gained widespread recognition with the romantic film Aashiqui 2 (2013).[1]

Early Life and Family

Aditya Roy Kapur was born in Mumbai to Kumud Roy Kapur, a Punjabi Hindu, and Salome Aaron, who is of Jewish descent. He comes from a film-oriented family. His elder brother Siddharth Roy Kapur is a film producer and former CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, and his other brother Kunaal Roy Kapur is an actor.[2]

His maternal grandparents were dance teachers who introduced the Samba dance to India. He completed his schooling at G.D. Somani Memorial School in Mumbai. He later studied at St. Xavier’s College.

During his early years, he was interested in sports, especially cricket, but later shifted his focus to media and entertainment.

Acting Career

Early Career (2009–2012)

Aditya Roy Kapur began his career as a VJ on Channel V India, where he hosted shows and gained popularity for his style and humor.[3]

He made his film debut with a supporting role in London Dreams (2009). He followed this with roles in films like Action Replayy (2010) and Guzaarish (2010). Though these films did not perform strongly at the box office, his performances were noticed.

Breakthrough and Success (2013)

Kapur achieved major success with Aashiqui 2 (2013), where he played the role of a troubled singer. The film became a commercial hit and established him as a leading actor.

In the same year, he appeared in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which became one of the highest-grossing Indian films. His role earned him the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor and a nomination at the Filmfare Awards.

Career Fluctuations (2014–2019)

Following his breakthrough, Kapur appeared in several films such as Daawat-e-Ishq (2014), Fitoor (2016), Ok Jaanu (2017), and Kalank (2019). These films received mixed to negative responses and did not perform well commercially.[4]

Despite this phase, his performances were noted for sincerity and screen presence.

Resurgence (2020–Present)

Kapur made a strong comeback with Malang (2020), where his performance received positive reviews.

In the same year, he appeared in the Netflix film Ludo, which earned critical acclaim.
