Diljit Dosanjh (born 6 January 1984) is an Indian singer, actor, and producer associated with Punjabi and Hindi cinema. Known for his chart-topping music and commercially successful films, he has played a major role in taking Punjabi entertainment to a global audience. In 2023, he became the first Indian artist to perform in Punjabi at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. In 2024, he appeared on the cover of the inaugural print edition of Billboard Canada.

Early Life and Education

Diljit Dosanjh was born in Dosanjh Kalan, Jalandhar district, Punjab, into a Jat Sikh family. His parents are Balbir Singh Dosanjh and Sukhwinder Kaur. At the age of 11, he moved to Ludhiana to live with his maternal uncle for better educational opportunities. He completed his schooling at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School.

During his school years, he began singing devotional hymns in local gurdwaras. His interest in music continued through his college years, where he also performed in theatre and cultural events.

Musical Career

Punjabi Music

Dosanjh began performing professionally in his late teens. His debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada was released in 2003, followed by Dil. He gained recognition with the album Smile (2005). A major breakthrough came with the track “Lak 28 Kudi Da,” in collaboration with Yo Yo Honey Singh, which topped the BBC Asian Download Chart in 2011.

In 2013, his single “Proper Patola” became the first Punjabi song to be featured on Vevo. Over the years, albums such as Back to Basics, Roar, Ghost, and G.O.A.T. expanded his global reach. His music spans party tracks, romantic ballads, and spiritual songs, appealing to a diverse audience.

Dosanjh made a cameo appearance in Mel Karade Rabba (2010) and debuted as a lead actor in The Lion of Punjab (2011). Although the film did not perform strongly at the box office, its music gained popularity.

His breakthrough came with Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011). In 2012, he starred in Jatt & Juliet, which became a major commercial success and established him as a leading actor in Punjabi cinema. Its sequels, Jatt & Juliet 2 (2013) and Jatt & Juliet 3 (2024), were also well received.

He expanded into different genres with films such as Sardaarji (2015) and its sequel Sardaarji 2 (2016).

Bollywood Breakthrough

Dosanjh made his Hindi film debut with Udta Punjab (2016), where he appeared alongside Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. His performance received critical appreciation.

He later appeared in Phillauri (2017), Welcome to New York (2018), Soorma (2018), and Good Newwz (2019). In 2024, he portrayed the titular role in Amar Singh Chamkila, a biographical film based on the life of the Punjabi singer.
