Zayn Malik

Zain Javadd Malik (born 12 January 1993), known professionally as Zayn Malik or simply Zayn, is an English singer. He first gained fame as a member of the boy band One Direction, formed during the British television show The X Factor in 2010. The group became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

He left One Direction in March 2015 to pursue a solo career and signed with RCA Records. His debut album Mind of Mine (2016) and its lead single "Pillowtalk" both debuted at number one in the UK and the United States, making him the first British male artist to achieve this feat.

Early life

Zain Javadd Malik was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. His father is of British Pakistani origin, while his mother is of English and Irish descent.

He grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Bradford and attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School. During his teenage years, he developed an interest in music and performing arts, appearing in school productions.

Before pursuing music, Malik considered studying English at university to become a teacher.

Career

2010–2015: The X Factor and One Direction

In 2010, Malik auditioned for The X Factor as a solo contestant. Although he did not progress far individually, he was grouped with four other contestants—Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson—to form One Direction.
