He served as the 17th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from May 2019 until June 2024. He is the son of former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Y. S. Vijayamma.[1]
Early Life and Education
Jagan Mohan Reddy was born in Jammalamadugu, Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Hyderabad Public School and earned a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Pragathi Mahavidyalaya, Hyderabad. He married Bharathi in 1996, and the couple has two daughters.
Political Career
Entry into Politics
Jagan entered politics through the Indian National Congress and was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Kadapa constituency in 2009.[2]
Formation of YSR Congress Party
After the death of his father in a helicopter crash in 2009, Jagan undertook the Odarpu Yatra, a condolence tour across Andhra Pradesh, which led to a fallout with the Congress leadership. He resigned from the party and his MP seat on November 29, 2010. On March 12, 2011, he launched the YSR Congress Party, named after his father.[3]
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh
In the 2019 Legislative Assembly elections, YSRCP won 151 out of 175 seats, securing a landslide victory. Jagan Mohan Reddy was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 30, 2019. His tenure focused on large-scale welfare programs such as Navaratnalu, which included initiatives in healthcare, education, and housing.
In the 2024 elections, YSRCP suffered a major defeat, leading Jagan to resign as Chief Minister on June 4, 2024.
Legal Challenges
Jagan has faced multiple legal challenges, including a disproportionate assets case investigated by the CBI. He was arrested in 2012 and spent over a year in custody. In July 2024, he was also booked in an attempted murder case involving a TDP legislator.[4]
Controversies
In November 2024, Jagan denied allegations related to a bribery case involving solar power procurement and clarified that the agreement was with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), not the Adani Group.
Personal Life
Jagan resides in Vijayawada. His sister, Y. S. Sharmila, is also active in politics.[5]
