Shreya Ghoshal (born 12 March 1984) is an Indian playback singer and live performer. Known for her mellifluous voice and tonal clarity, she has recorded songs for Hindi and various regional film industries. She is a multiple National Film Award and Filmfare Award winner and is regarded as one of the most successful singers in contemporary Indian cinema.

Early Life and Education

Shreya Ghoshal was born in Berhampore, West Bengal. She spent her early childhood in Rawatbhata, near Kota in Rajasthan, where her father worked at the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Her mother encouraged her musical training from an early age.[1]

She began learning music at the age of four and started formal training in Hindustani classical music at six. She received guidance from teachers including Rakesh Sharma and Mahesh Chandra Sharma in Kota. After her family moved to Mumbai in 1997, she continued classical training under Mukta Bhide and later received playback training from Kalyanji Bhai.[2]

She completed her schooling at Atomic Energy Central School, Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai.

Early Career and Television Success

Her first major recognition came in 1995 when she won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition organized by the Sangam Kala Group. She later gained national attention by winning the television singing competition Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) on Zee TV in its children’s special and later episodes.[3]

Her success on the show led to opportunities in the music industry and professional training in playback singing.

Bollywood Breakthrough

Shreya Ghoshal made her Bollywood debut in 2002 with the film Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She recorded five songs for the film, including:

  • “Bairi Piya”
  • “Silsila Ye Chahat Ka”
  • “Dola Re Dola”

Her performance in Devdas earned her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.[4]

In addition to Hindi cinema, Shreya has recorded extensively in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi films. She has received multiple state film awards for her work in South Indian cinema.

She has performed internationally in countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. She has performed at venues such as Wembley Arena, Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

In 2013, she was honored in the UK House of Commons. June 26 was declared as “Shreya Ghoshal Day” in the state of Ohio, USA.

She also became the first Indian singer to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in India.

Shreya Ghoshal’s singing style is influenced by Hindustani classical music, ghazal, Sufi and Indian folk traditions. She is known for clear diction and expressive emotional delivery.
