Satya Narayana Nadella (born 19 August 1967) is an Indian-American business executive who serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft. He became CEO in 2014 and later became Chairman in 2021. He is credited with transforming Microsoft into a global cloud computing leader.[1]

Early Life and Education

Satya Nadella was born on 19 August 1967 in Hyderabad, India, into a Telugu Hindu family. His father was an Indian Administrative Service officer and his mother was a Sanskrit lecturer.

He studied at Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in 1988. He moved to the United States for higher studies and completed a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1990. In 1997, he completed his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.[2]

Career

Early Career

Before Microsoft, Nadella worked at Sun Microsystems as part of its technology team.

Microsoft (1992–present)

Satya Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 and worked across multiple leadership roles in engineering, enterprise, and cloud computing divisions.

He played a key role in developing Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and leading its shift toward cloud services. As head of the Server and Tools Business, he helped expand Microsoft Azure into a major global cloud platform.[3]

CEO Appointment

In 2014, Nadella became the CEO of Microsoft, becoming the third CEO in the company’s history. In 2021, he also became Chairman of Microsoft.

Under his leadership, Microsoft focused on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cross-platform collaboration. He promoted partnerships with companies such as Apple, IBM, and Salesforce, and supported Linux integration within Microsoft systems.

He led major acquisitions including:

  • GitHub

Under his leadership, Microsoft’s market value and cloud business grew significantly.[4]
