Randeep Guleria

Indian pulmonologist and medical administrator

Randeep Guleria is an Indian pulmonologist and medical administrator, best known for serving as the Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He is widely recognized for his contributions to respiratory medicine and for establishing India's first dedicated centre for pulmonary diseases and sleep disorders at AIIMS.[1]

Early Life and Education

Randeep Guleria completed his schooling at St. Columba's School, Delhi. He pursued his medical education at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in medicine. He later attended the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where he completed his MD in General Medicine and DM in Pulmonary Medicine.[2]

Career

Guleria joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he rose through the ranks to become Professor and Head of the Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders. He later served as the Director of AIIMS New Delhi and also held the position of President of AIIMS Bilaspur.

He is credited with establishing India’s first centre dedicated to pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders at AIIMS. His work significantly advanced respiratory care and research in the country.

Guleria has been associated with several international organizations. He served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) of the World Health Organization (WHO) on immunization and influenza vaccines. He has also worked as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, on radiation protection.

He was the personal physician to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee since 1998. He has contributed extensively to medical research and has served on editorial boards of journals such as Indian Journal of Chest Diseases, Lung India, JAMA, and Chest India.[3]

Contributions

Randeep Guleria played a key role in strengthening India's healthcare response during the COVID-19 pandemic. He co-authored the book Till We Win: India’s Fight Against the COVID-19 Pandemic, which documents India's strategies and experiences during the crisis.

His contributions to pulmonary medicine include research, clinical advancements, and policy advisory roles in public health.

Honours and Awards

Guleria has received several recognitions for his contributions to medicine. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. He also received the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award in 2014 under the eminent medical person category.

He is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and has received fellowships such as the Raj Nanda Pulmonary Disease Fellowship.[4]

Personal Life

Randeep Guleria is the son of Padma Shri awardee Jagdev Singh Guleria, a noted cardiologist. He is the elder brother of Sandeep Guleria, a surgeon and Padma Shri recipient.
