Kapil Sharma (born 2 April 1981) is an Indian stand-up comedian, actor, producer, television host, and singer who primarily works in Hindi entertainment. He is widely regarded as one of India’s most successful television comedians and is best known for hosting Comedy Nights with Kapil, The Kapil Sharma Show, and The Great Indian Kapil Show. He rose to national prominence after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 3 in 2007.[1]

Early life and education

Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab, to Jeetendra Kumar Punj and Janak Rani. He completed his schooling at Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and Hindu College in Amritsar. He later studied at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, where he actively participated in theatre and music, gradually developing an interest in performing arts.[2]

Career

Kapil Sharma gained national attention after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. Following his victory, he became a regular participant and winner on Comedy Circus, establishing himself as a popular television comedian.[3]

His breakthrough as a household name came with Comedy Nights with Kapil, which blended sketch comedy with celebrity interviews and became one of the highest-rated Indian television shows. He later launched The Kapil Sharma Show, which ran successfully for multiple seasons and cemented his position as India’s leading television entertainer.

Kapil made his Bollywood debut with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), which was a commercial success. He later appeared in Firangi (2017) and received critical acclaim for his performance in Zwigato (2023), a socially driven drama. In 2025, he returned to mainstream comedy films with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2.[4]

In 2024, Kapil launched The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, marking his digital debut and reuniting with several former collaborators. He also performs international comedy tours and has lent his voice to Hindi-dubbed versions of international films.

Personal life

Kapil Sharma married Ginni Chatrath on 12 December 2018 in Jalandhar. The couple has two children. He is known for maintaining a relatively private personal life despite his widespread public popularity.
