Dr. D. K. Sunil is a distinguished Indian aerospace engineer, currently serving as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). With a career spanning nearly four decades, he is recognized for his expertise in advanced avionics, radar systems, and indigenous aircraft development, playing a pivotal role in India’s aerospace innovation.[1]

Educational Background

Dr. Sunil holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics & Communication from Osmania University, a Master of Technology in Aircraft Production Engineering from IIT Madras, and a Ph.D. in Electronics Science from the University of Hyderabad. His doctoral research focused on spectrum sensing algorithms for cognitive radio, enhancing communications in aerospace systems.[2]

Career at HAL

Dr. Sunil began his journey at HAL in 1987 as a Management Trainee and has held various leadership positions across design, production, customer support, and R&D.

Technological Contributions

He led development of key systems including:

  • High Power Radar Power Supply
  • Voice Activated Control Systems
  • Combined Interrogator Transponders
  • AESA Radar and Automatic Flight Control Systems for LCH
  • Mission Computers for multiple aircraft

He was instrumental in setting up collaborations with premier institutes such as IIT Kanpur and IIIT Hyderabad for advanced datalink and voice technologies.[3]

Leadership Roles

In September 2022, Dr. Sunil became the Director of Engineering and R&D at HAL, overseeing all R&D programs. Under his leadership, HAL:

  • Achieved military certification for the HTT-40 trainer aircraft
  • Progressed on the IMRH for Indian Air Force and Army
  • Advanced the UHM project for the Indian Navy

In September 2024, he took additional charge as CMD of HAL, succeeding Mr. C. B. Ananthakrishnan. His term is scheduled to continue until his retirement on April 30, 2026.[4]
