Sunny Deol (born Ajay Singh Deol) is an Indian actor, film director, producer, and former Member of Parliament. Regarded as one of the most influential action stars in Hindi cinema, he is known for his intense screen presence, powerful dialogue delivery, and patriotic roles. Over a career spanning four decades, he has appeared in more than 100 Hindi films and received multiple national and industry honours.[1]

Early Life and Education

Sunny Deol was born on 19 October 1957 in Sahnewal, Punjab, into a Punjabi Jat family. He is the eldest son of veteran actor Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He has a younger brother, Bobby Deol, two sisters, Vijayta and Ajeeta, and half-sisters Esha and Ahana Deol. Actor Abhay Deol is his cousin.

He completed his schooling in Mumbai and later graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College. Sunny later trained in theatre at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham, United Kingdom, before returning to India to pursue acting.

Sunny Deol made his film debut with Betaab (1983), which became a major success and established him as a leading actor. Through the late 1980s, he built his reputation with action-oriented roles in films such as Arjun, Dacait, Paap Ki Duniya, and Tridev.

His breakthrough came with Ghayal (1990), where he portrayed a boxer fighting systemic injustice. The film earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 1993, his portrayal of a determined lawyer in Damini received widespread acclaim and won him another National Film Award.

The mid-to-late 1990s marked the peak of his career. Films such as Jeet, Ghatak, Ziddi, and the war epic Border became major box-office successes. Border (1997), based on the Battle of Longewala, remains one of India’s most celebrated war films.[2]

In 2001, Sunny delivered one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema history with Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. His role as Tara Singh became iconic, and the film broke multiple box-office records. He continued to headline large-scale films through the early 2000s, including Indian and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy.[3]

After a mixed phase during the 2000s and 2010s, Sunny made a notable comeback with Chup: Revenge of the Artist (2022). His career resurgence reached new heights with Gadar 2 (2023), which became the highest-grossing film of his career and one of the biggest Hindi hits of all time.

Direction and Production

Sunny Deol made his directorial debut with Dillagi (1999). In 2019, he directed Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, introducing his son Karan Deol as a lead actor.

Political Career

In 2019, Sunny Deol joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur, Punjab. He served a single term and later chose not to contest the 2024 general elections, citing his preference to focus on cinema.

Sunny Deol is married to Pooja Deol, and the couple has two sons, Karan Deol and Rajveer Deol. Despite belonging to one of Bollywood’s most prominent families, he is known for maintaining a private personal life.
