Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr. (born October 8, 1960) is an American billionaire businessman and entrepreneur. He is best known as the co-founder of Netflix, a leading global streaming service. Hastings has played a key role in transforming the entertainment industry through digital streaming and innovative business strategies.[1]

Early Life and Education
Reed Hastings was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Wilmot Reed Hastings Sr., an attorney, and Joan Amory Loomis. He studied at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School before attending Bowdoin College, where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in mathematics.[2]
After college, he served in the Peace Corps, teaching mathematics in Swaziland (now Eswatini) from 1983 to 1985. He later pursued higher education at Stanford University, earning a Master of Science in Computer Science in 1988.
Career
Early Career and Pure Software
Hastings began his career at Adaptive Technology, where he developed debugging tools. In 1991, he founded Pure Software, a company focused on software troubleshooting tools. Despite initial challenges in management, the company grew rapidly.[3]
In 1996, Pure Software merged with Atria Software, forming Pure Atria, which was later acquired by Rational Software in 1997. Hastings served as Chief Technical Officer before leaving the company.
Founding of Netflix
In 1997, Hastings co-founded Netflix along with Marc Randolph. Initially, Netflix operated as a DVD rental-by-mail service. The idea reportedly came after Hastings incurred a late fee for renting a movie.[4]
Netflix later transitioned into a streaming platform in 2007, revolutionizing how audiences consume films and television content. Under Hastings' leadership, Netflix became one of the world's largest entertainment companies.
In April 2026, Hastings announced that he would step down from Netflix’s board in June 2026.
Business Ventures
Hastings has served on the boards of several major companies, including Microsoft and Facebook. He is also an investor in ventures such as Powder Mountain ski resort and the AI company Anthropic.
Philanthropy and Education Advocacy
Hastings has been actively involved in education reform. He served as president of the California State Board of Education and has strongly supported charter schools.[5]
He has donated millions to educational causes, including $120 million to historically Black colleges and universities and $50 million to Bowdoin College for AI research initiatives.

Hastings has contributed to various political campaigns and causes. He has supported candidates such as Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris and has made donations toward education reforms and public policy initiatives.
