Jack Patrick Dorsey (born November 19, 1976) is an American technology entrepreneur and businessman. He is best known as the co-founder of Twitter, Inc., and the founder and CEO of Block, Inc., a financial technology company that operates services such as Square and Cash App. Dorsey has also been associated with the development of the decentralized social platform Bluesky.[1]

Early Life and Education

Jack Dorsey was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. His father, Timothy G. Dorsey, worked in mass spectrometry technology, while his mother, Marcia Dorsey, was a homemaker. He was raised in a Catholic family and has partial Italian ancestry from his mother's side.[2]

Dorsey attended Bishop DuBourg High School. During his teenage years, he developed an interest in dispatch routing systems. He enrolled at the University of Missouri–Rolla in 1995 before transferring to New York University in 1997. However, he dropped out before completing his degree.

Career

Twitter

Dorsey conceived the idea of a real-time status-sharing platform while studying at New York University. In 2006, he co-founded Twitter along with Biz Stone, Evan Williams, and Noah Glass. He became the company’s first CEO in 2007.[3]

Under his leadership, Twitter grew into one of the world’s most influential social media platforms. He stepped down as CEO in 2008 but later returned to the role in 2015. In November 2021, Dorsey resigned as CEO and left the board in 2022.

Block, Inc.

In 2009, Dorsey co-founded Square (now Block, Inc.) with Jim McKelvey. The company developed a mobile card payment system that allows businesses to accept payments via smartphones.[4]

Block expanded to include multiple financial services such as:

  • Square (payment processing)
  • Cash App (peer-to-peer payments)
  • Afterpay (buy now, pay later service)
  • Tidal (music streaming)
  • Bitkey (crypto wallet)

Dorsey remains CEO of Block, Inc.

Bluesky and Other Ventures

Dorsey supported the creation of Bluesky, a decentralized social networking project initially incubated within Twitter. He served on its board before stepping down in 2024.

He is also a strong advocate of Bitcoin and decentralized technologies. He has funded multiple crypto-related initiatives and projects aimed at decentralization.

In 2025, he launched a peer-to-peer messaging app called Bitchat and supported the development of new decentralized platforms.

Personal Life

Dorsey has lived in San Francisco, California. He is known for his interest in meditation and mindfulness practices, including Vipassanā meditation.[5]

He has been actively involved in philanthropy. In 2020, he pledged about $1 billion of his wealth to charitable causes through his initiative "Start Small," supporting COVID-19 relief, education, and universal basic income programs.
