Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (born May 14, 1984) is an American businessman and programmer. He co-founded Facebook and its parent company Meta Platforms. He serves as chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), and controlling shareholder. He is among the world’s wealthiest individuals.[1]
Early Life
Mark Zuckerberg was born in White Plains, New York, to Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist, and Karen Zuckerberg, a psychiatrist. He grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, with his three sisters.
He attended Ardsley High School and later transferred to Phillips Exeter Academy. During school, he showed strong skills in programming and was captain of the fencing team.[2]
Software Development
Early Projects
Zuckerberg began programming at a young age. As a teenager, he created a messaging system called "ZuckNet" that connected his home and his father’s dental office.
He later developed a music software called Synapse Media Player, which used machine learning to recommend songs.[3]
Harvard Years
Zuckerberg joined Harvard University in 2002, where he studied computer science and psychology. During this time, he created programs like CourseMatch and Facemash.
Facemash allowed students to compare photos, but it was shut down by the university due to privacy concerns.[4]
Career
In February 2004, Zuckerberg launched Facebook with his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.
The platform quickly expanded beyond Harvard to other universities and later to the public. Zuckerberg left Harvard to focus on growing the company.
Facebook went public in 2012. Under his leadership, it became one of the largest social media platforms in the world.
Meta Platforms
Facebook later rebranded as Meta Platforms, focusing on virtual reality and the metaverse. Zuckerberg continued as CEO and chairman.
He has led major product expansions including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger integrations.

Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The organization focuses on education, science, and equality.
