Jyothika (born Jyothika Sadanah on 18 October 1978) is an Indian actress and film producer who primarily works in Tamil cinema, along with Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi films. One of the most successful actresses in South Indian cinema, she has received a National Film Award, multiple Filmfare Awards South, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and the Kalaimamani Award for her contribution to Tamil cinema.

Early Life and Education

Jyothika was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, to film producer Chander Sadanah and actress Seema Sadanah. She grew up in Mumbai and completed her schooling at Learners Academy. She later pursued a degree in psychology from Mithibai College, Mumbai.[1]

She has siblings including Roshini and actress Nagma, who is her half-sister.[2]

Career

Early Career and Breakthrough (1997–2004)

Jyothika made her acting debut with the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1997), directed by Priyadarshan. She made her Tamil debut with Vaali (1999), earning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. Her performance in Kushi (2000) won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil.[3]

She went on to star in several successful films including Dumm Dumm Dumm, Poovellam Un Vasam, Kaakha Kaakha, and Perazhagan, establishing herself as a leading actress.

Stardom and Critical Acclaim (2005–2007)

Jyothika delivered critically acclaimed performances in Chandramukhi (2005) and Mozhi (2007). Her role in Mozhi earned her a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress and a nomination for the National Film Award for Best Actress. She became one of the most nominated actresses in the Filmfare Awards South for Tamil cinema.[4]

Hiatus and Comeback (2006–2017)

At the peak of her career, Jyothika took a break from films following her marriage to actor Suriya in 2006. She made a successful comeback with 36 Vayadhinile (2015), earning widespread praise and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – South.

Women-centric Cinema and Production (2017–present)

Following her comeback, Jyothika focused on strong, women-led films such as Magalir Mattum, Naachiyaar, Kaatrin Mozhi, Raatchasi, and Ponmagal Vandhal. She also appeared in Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer Chekka Chivantha Vaanam.

As a producer under 2D Entertainment, she has been associated with acclaimed films including Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim, both of which received National Film Awards. Her recent work includes Kaathal – The Core and Shaitaan.

Personal Life

Jyothika married actor Suriya on 11 September 2006 after co-starring in several films together. The couple has two children, Dev and Divya. She resides in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and is known for maintaining a low-profile personal life.
