Dhurandhar is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language spy action thriller film written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar. Produced under the banners of Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the film features an ensemble cast led by Ranveer Singh, alongside Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal. Inspired by real intelligence operations, the film explores themes of espionage, sacrifice, and national security.[1]

Plot

The narrative of Dhurandhar is set against the backdrop of two major historical events — the 1999 IC-814 hijacking and the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. The story follows Ajay Sanyal, the head of India’s Intelligence Bureau, who devises a high-risk covert mission to dismantle a powerful terrorist network operating from Pakistan.[2]

To execute this mission, Sanyal recruits a 20-year-old prisoner from Punjab, incarcerated for an act of revenge. Recognising the young man’s hidden potential, Sanyal mentors him into becoming an undercover operative capable of infiltrating the dangerous criminal underworld of Karachi. The film traces the transformation of the recruit and the moral, emotional, and political costs of espionage.[3]

Development

The project was officially announced by Ranveer Singh in July 2024. The film’s title, Dhurandhar, was revealed in December 2024. The storyline draws inspiration from real geopolitical events and covert intelligence missions. Journalist Aditya Raj Kaul served as a consultant to enhance authenticity.[4]

Filming

Principal photography began in July 2024 in Bangkok. Subsequent schedules took place in Amritsar near the Golden Temple, Mumbai’s Filmistan Studios, Madh Island, Ladakh, and other locations. Portions depicting Pakistan were recreated in Thailand. Filming concluded in October 2025 after completing extensive action sequences and large-scale sets.

Casting

Ranveer Singh was cast as the lead, with Sanjay Dutt and R. Madhavan joining the project in mid-2024. Akshaye Khanna and Arjun Rampal were later added to the ensemble. Sara Arjun was cast as the female lead in October 2024. Madhavan portrays National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Music

The film’s soundtrack was composed by Shashwat Sachdev, with additional music by Charanjit Ahuja. The music blends Punjabi folk, rap, and orchestral arrangements to match the film’s intense tone.

The title track, Dhurandhar, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the Punjabi classic Na Dil De Pardesi Nu (1995). The soundtrack also includes a remix version of the song.
