History

Chennai Super Kings was one of the eight original franchises formed at the inception of the IPL in 2008. MS Dhoni was appointed captain from the inaugural season, and the team reached the final in its debut year.

Between 2010 and 2011, CSK achieved major success by winning back-to-back IPL titles, becoming the first team to defend an IPL championship. During this period, the franchise also won the Champions League T20 twice.

From 2012 to 2015, CSK consistently qualified for the playoffs and reached multiple finals, reinforcing its reputation as a dominant side. The team was suspended for two seasons in 2016 and 2017.[2]

CSK made a historic comeback in 2018 by winning the IPL title in its return season. The franchise added further titles in 2021 and 2023, taking its total championship count to five.

In 2024, MS Dhoni stepped down from full-time captaincy, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over leadership duties. The team entered a transition phase while maintaining its competitive presence.[3]
