Erling Braut Haaland (born 21 July 2000) is a Norwegian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Manchester City and captains the Norway national football team. Widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world and the greatest Norwegian player of all time, Haaland is known for his exceptional goalscoring ability, pace, strength, positioning and clinical finishing.[1]

Early Life

Haaland was born in Leeds, England, while his father Alf-Inge Haaland was playing for Leeds United. In 2004, his family moved back to Bryne in Norway, where he spent most of his childhood and began his football journey. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a national heptathlon champion in Norway.[2]

Club Career

Bryne

Haaland started his football career at Bryne FK and quickly gained attention for his remarkable goalscoring record at youth level.

Molde

In 2017, he joined Molde under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær. His performances in the Norwegian league established him as one of Europe's brightest young talents.[3]

Red Bull Salzburg

Haaland joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2019 and won both the Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup. His performances in the UEFA Champions League made him internationally famous.[4]

Borussia Dortmund

In January 2020, Haaland signed for Borussia Dortmund and won the DFB-Pokal in 2021. He became one of the Bundesliga's most dominant strikers and won the Bundesliga Player of the Season award.[5]

Manchester City

Haaland joined Manchester City in 2022 for a transfer fee of €60 million. In his debut season, he scored 36 Premier League goals and 52 goals in all competitions, helping Manchester City win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League to complete a historic continental treble.[6]

International Career

Haaland represented Norway at various youth levels and won the Golden Boot at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup after scoring nine goals in a single match against Honduras. He made his senior debut for Norway in 2019 and later became the country's all-time leading goalscorer.[7]

Style of Play

Haaland is considered a complete centre-forward. He combines physical strength, speed, movement, aerial ability and clinical finishing. His ability to score with both feet and his head makes him one of the most dangerous strikers in world football.[8]

Personal Life

Haaland is the son of former footballer Alf-Inge Haaland and athlete Gry Marita Braut. He changed the spelling of his surname from "Håland" to "Haaland" in 2019 to make it easier for international fans to pronounce and remember. He is also known for his meditation celebration after scoring goals.[9]
